Who are they? The millennials in our list are those born between 1982 and 2000. (However, these boundaries are not set in stone, with varied organizations differing slightly on the dates.) Also known as Gen Y, this demographic cohort following Gen X has surpassed the baby boomers as the nation’s largest living generation, according to population estimates released earlier this year by the US Census Bureau.

So why all this hoopla around this group? Today, millennials are also the largest segment of the US workforce. It is estimated that by 2025, they will comprise as much as 75% of the workforce. They are going to impact America’s workplace and corporate culture in many ways, albeit differently than their parents (baby boomers, Gen X) did before them.

“They are the most threatening and exciting generation since the baby boomers brought about social revolution, not because they’re trying to take over the Establishment, but because they’re growing up without one,” writes Time magazine in a cover story on the millennials.

And these digital natives are popping into prominence in various segments of the industry. They are getting noticed for their desire for pragmatic action that drives results, their ease with technology and, in many cases, their self-obsession. From the selfie to the Snapchat story to the Instagram direct message, this group has taken the “me” story to another level. But it’s also tempered with an interest in their daily work being a reflection of, and part of, larger concerns faced by our society.

The people on the list are the industry’s up-and-comers and others who have already made a mark. Nominated by the industry, this list of 35 has been compiled by the SIA editorial team. It is not a ranking, but a recognition of a group that is shaping the future of the American economy. Sponsored by Monster, this list includes millennials in the workforce solutions ecosystem. It does not include suppliers to the industry or staffing buyers. Rather, it’s a snapshot of several millennials with noteworthy stories in our industry.
