Getting on SIA’s list of Fastest-Growing US Staffing Firms at any time is no mean achievement. But after a year like 2020, it takes on a whole new meaning. The industry — temporary staffing, direct hire and retained search — was down by 11%, according to SIA data. Yet, the 52 firms on this year’s list generated a median compound annual growth rate, or CAGR, of 26.1% from 2016 to 2020. And the top 10 firms posted a median CAGR of 58.8% in that time period — staggering numbers that beg the question: What was behind their success?

Culture. The top 10 firms are passionate about their internal workers, the candidates they place and the clients they service. These firms believe in the industry mission: placing the right person for the job, as it helps them stay relevant in this competitive marketplace. This attitude permeates the firms’ hallways. Executives of the top 10 share their stories.

This issue offers more insights as well. Jackson Healthcare President Shane Jackson discusses how his company was improved through the pandemic experience, thanks to having well-defined organizational beliefs and operating systems. And Adam Barnes, a program manager with Northwestern Mutual, discusses three types of staffing firms he encounters and which ones are likely to get a seat at his table.
